Motherboard problems are catastrophic but rarely obvious unless you open the case and see a big burn mark of the motherboard. Troubleshooting motherboard failures often requires a bit of parts swapping, though any compatible part will do (ie, you don't need to replace your high-end video card another high performance adapter just to see if the motherboard is still functioning.
To avoid excessive parts swapping, it's important to carefully observe the powered up system for motherboard LEDs, signs of life like the CPU and case fans, or RAM that never gets warm to the touch. On a dead motherboard, you may be able to detect a blown component like a resistor or capacitor by visual observation, often aided by smell.
Symptoms
- No power
- Power but no boot
- Over heat
- Shut down
- Blue screen
- Random power off
- No sound
- No video
- No charge
- Do not recognize devices, do not recognize hard drive, CD-ROM, keyboard, digital cards.
- Bad BIOS chipM
- Cannot install OS/software
- No Wireless and no Ethernet (LAN)
- Bad PCMCIA port, bad USB ports, bad printer port
- Shut down/hang when moved
- AC adapter turns off when plug in.
